Scenic Design
Challenge

Reminders:
- This event is a time challenge and is not a judged event.

- The goal is to have fun, work as a team, apply skills, and show off creativity.

- Following the challenge, designs will be displayed throughout the rest of the
conference.

- Following closing ceremonies, we ask that you take your box with you and display or
dispose of it at your home school.

Rules:
- Team Size - Maximum 4 people per team

• If your school has more than 4 participants, you’re welcome to have more than 1 team.

• Each team needs their own box, but teams can share supplies.

- Time – 50-minute build

- Box – You may not alter the size of the box in any way or remove parts of the box.

• You can cut a hole or slit in the top to hang scenic pieces if desired.

- Your design must be fully contained inside your box

 

The Challenge:

- At the beginning of the challenge, all teams will be reminded of rules & time.

- All teams will receive 2-3 descriptions of scenes from musicals or plays. As a team
you will choose which scene to create.

- Teams will have 50-minutes to create their selected scene.

- After 50-minutes, teams complete their “tag” by listing their school name, team
members, and design selected. Additionally, they will have their picture taken for the
Thespian Instagram and website. (Picture is optional)

- Teams are responsible for cleaning up their area and surrounding areas to leave the
space as it was found, prior to leaving the challenge area.

Supplies:
- Your team must supply all items for this event.

- Every team must supply their own box, which will serve as the “stage”. This box
should be a standard paper box that schools get shipments of paper reems in.

(Remember that you need to get your supplies home in a box OTHER than the one you

are using to make your scene!)

- Limited number of extension cords will be available, we recommend bringing your
own, as hot glue is the main way to adhere your set together in the time allotted.

-You cannot use – Spray paints, spray adhesives, flames/lighters, other
hazardous materials

- Scissors
- Box Cutter / Exacto Knife

• Cutting mat or scrap material to cut on (Required for box cutter / exacto knife)

- Hot Glue Gun, Sticks / Extension Cord
- Paper / Construction Paper / Foam Board
- Pipe Cleaners
- String / Ribbon
- Paint / Paint Brushes
- Markers / Crayons / Colored Pencils
- Glue (paste or stick)
- Tape
- Other craft-based materials - Pompoms, popsicle sticks, googly eyes, etc.
- Recycled materials
- Balsa Wood
- Paper Towels
